Resistance Piers & Piles

Resistance Piles and Piers for Foundation Problems

Resistance piers, specifically hydraulic push piers, are much like helical piers but without the helix. Steel rods are driven into the ground by a hydraulic jack, with the jack pressing firmly against the foundation to provide support and stability.

Hydraulic push piers require some friction and only work when the upper foundation is strong enough to handle the load. They aren’t ideal when there is a lot of expansive soil present with a lot of moisture (as is common throughout Colorado’s Front Range, from Fort Collins, to Denver and Colorado Springs). They need to be driven to bedrock with force and the expansive clay in the intermediate layers can cause the piers to lift up.

If the upper foundation isn’t strong enough to handle the load and there is the presence of expansive soil in the intermediate layer (again, this is a common issue along the Front Range), helical piers, which are end-loaded and are not impacted by lighter top-layer foundations, would be a better option than resistance piers.
Other requirements for installation of resistance piers include an established foundation (this is not idea for new construction) with the ability to handle a concentrated load (typical weights can be around one ton per lineal foot).

Benefits of installing push piers as opposed to helical piers include cost since there is no helical blade and they are installed without any torque equipment.
